Theo Chocolate Candy Bars
30 Jul
A little collision of Theo chocolate goodness happened on my desk today: the organic mint with dark chocolate and orange dark chocolate varieties. I believe a side by side play by play is in order!
Packaging
Both bars come in the standard full size design from Theo. We reviewed one of their smaller batch varieties earlier, the Bread and Dark Chocolate bar, which had all kinds of cartoon designs on it. These go a more muted, classic way. I like it. Green is mint, Orange is orange. I also like that the organic and fair trade info is displayed, but not screaming in my face.
Appearance
Both bars are very very smooth looking. There’s just a hint more glossiness on the orange bar and the mint is just a little darker, but they are nearly identical. The mint bar looks like it has a bit more texture inside, but it’s pretty negligible.
Taste
Theo Mint Dark Chocolate
The mint dark chocolate bar has a very sharp chocolate smell. At first the mint taste reminds of super spearmint candy and Christmas, but as it starts to melt, it really reminds me of a heavier flavored Andes mint. The same kind of thickness and sweetness and it is powerful. I can eat one of the large square and that would be it for the rest of the day.
Theo Orange Dark Chocolate
The orange smell isn’t as powerful as the mint’s was, but that is to be expected. It’s faint, the smell of the dark chocolate is definitely the top note. At first bite the orange really starts to come through, it’s a very pleasant orange, not too much and not too sweet. As the bar melts it gets a little more sour, but in a good way. The dark chocolate really compliments this flavoring. It’s a thick, coating of the inside of your mouth chocolate, but that gives it a definite staying power. (The good kind).
The verdict? Orange. I will buy orange!
