Sjaak’s Organic Chocolates a Northern California company, is a family company focused on organic, fair trade and in some cases vegan chocolates. Today, we’ll be sampling their milk chocolate peanut butter bar, where every ingredient (except for the sea salt- I would think by default that is) has the word “organic” before it. And in a very different approach, they are a lacto-vegetarian operation, which means no eggs or gelatin in their factory. So how does lacto-vegetarian chocolate taste?
Packaging
Their logo is a representation of one of their co-founders, who is from Holland. The squarish-ness and heft of the bar make me want to start stacking them like Jenga blocks. While the coloring is kind of bland, it’s very clearly labeled and I do like how pretty their logo is.
Appearance
The individual squares themselves remind me of squished Tootsie Rolls. Not that that’s a bad thing- it’s just what I think of. The interior of the pieces are very much peanut butter filled and the scent of milk chocolate, while promising, has an odd old smell for the peanut butter.
Taste
The milk chocolate itself tastes drier and becomes creamier as I chew, overall- not bad. The part I don’t like is the peanut butter- which has an almost moldy aftertaste. To be sure, I ate a few blocks and with that, the peanut butter did get better tasting and the aftertaste was covered by the milk chocolate. Bottom line- it’s OK and at $1.99 is a very affordable all organic chocolate candy bar. I think to be fair I’ll seek out another kind of bar from their line like the Raspberry Truffle or Caramel before I make my final verdict on Sjaak’s Chocolates.
Who knows? Maybe Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups in all their greasy glory has ruined me for other peanut butter chocolate confections for life.
