A co-worker brought this offering up to me claiming it was the best dark chocolate she’d ever had. So immediately I placed my expectations at Russel Stover low. (KIDDING!) I do figure it must be quite good though for her to save some, bring it to work with the package intact for photographing and let me try a little. The bar in question was obtained at a local drugstore, Pharmaca, which clearly isn’t making chocolate on site alongside the all natural vitamins, but it does make one question a pharmacy brand chocolate bar.

Appearance

Pharmaca Organic Dark Chocolate

The wrapper was a thick, non glossy paper with a gold foil interior and a 60’s-ish pattern of cocoa beans. The bar itself was the standard dark chocolate color, but broken up into longer bars that I’m used to seeing in chocolate portions.

The pieces break off clean and with a nice snap.

Smell

The smell is very rich, very chocolate-y and almost sharp at the end. With 66% cacao, I expect bitterness, but not enough to make me want to chase it with a White Russian.

Taste

This bar was really fun to bite because of the loud SNAP that happens when you do. At first it seemed almost waxy, but as I got to chewing the chocolate evened out, was much less bitter than most 60%+ cacao bars, smooth at the end with a very pleasant after taste. The bar dissolved well without sticking or coating anything. I found just one of the little mini bars to be very satisfying.

At under $4, it’s right in line for price and portion of it’s competitors. I recommend that it’s best after a meal, finishing with just one or two of the little bars.

Move over, dinner mint, you’ve been replaced.

  • I scooped this chocolate! It was displayed at the local pharmacy that just opened as a sample and I had a bite and had to buy a bar. I am way more fond of dark chocolate these days as I’ve found “Good” ones! This tops my list! Yum!
