We all are familiar with the modular furniture giant with it’s efficient Swedish design, technology and meatballs, but how are they at making chocolate? Clearly they have to have contracted that out (Germany!) since sawdust and cocoa don’t really mix, but at 99cents a 3.5oz bar, I’m willing to find out.
Today’s taste test is the Milk Chocolate with Hazelnuts bar from Ikea Food and it passes the first test: cocoa butter, not a bunch of oils in the ingredients list. I believe we can thank the much more rigid chocolate industry of Europe and Scandinavia for that one. Also that they’ve listed out that hazelnuts make up 12% of the bar and cocoa solids 30%.
Packaging:
It’s Ok, it’s yellow, it’s retro. I’d rather pay less than more for a something I’m just going to throw away anyway.
Smell:
Smells good. Really good. Very milk chocolate-y and the hazelnuts are definitely detectable.
Appearance:
Is a little sketchy. It’s got the white marks throughout the bar that indicate that it was frozen or kept a little too cold and not thawed out quite right. Simple bar design though and easily broken up into bite size pieces.
Taste:
The Swedes via Germany can make chocolate, good chocolate! It’s a nice consistency (not as melt in your mouth as Swiss chocolate) but definitely not crumbly or dry. The generous amounts of hazelnut help a lot and convince me that I have gotten more than my 99cents worth in value and taste.
Currently there is a deal to purchase the hazelnut, milk and dark varieties for $2.70, a savings of .27cents. Unfortunately I thought they were $2.70 each, not for all 3.
Now that curiosity has been peaked, I’ll head back over and grab the other bars and see how they stack up without the help of hazelnuts!
