Frey Supreme Japonais

Having done the research on Frey Supreme Swiss Chocolates, tested the Pear and Caramel and looked around to see what others are saying, it’s time to get back to the taste testing! Today’s test taste was the flavor Japonais. An odd name that seemingly has nothing to do with the flavor itself. It’s a milk chocolate candy bar flavored with hazelnut and little bits of meringue biscuit through the center. “Japonais” is the French word for “Japanese” (and probably something else) so why the Swiss named this particular chocolate bar that, is beyond me.

Back to the bar itself. Just as with the pear and caramel, Frey has held true to quality milk chocolate. Smooth and delicious the only drawback was that this type of Frey seems to have a lower melting temperature. I tried this bar myself and a co-worker had procured the same bar from Target independently and had the same milk chocolate melting all over her fingers almost immediately. After eating the first square I determined that this is a bar best served chilled. So into the fridge it went for a bit and the milk chocolate taste was not only fully intact but now much easier to consume.

The hazelnut flavor was beautiful, not overpowering, but also without the crunch of the nuts themselves, which is sometimes nice. The only crunch came quietly and delicately through the meringue biscuit bits mixed into the chocolate.

All in all: A great buy for anyone who appreciates hazelnuts and chocolate. Particularly if you’re a nibbler and the Snickers Milky Ways and Baby Ruths of the world are too much for you.

  • Personally, I really like the pear and caramel. The grittiness of the pear made it really unusual but at the same time not weird at all. I will have to try the Japonais though. Meringue biscuit sounds as if it could have a similar texture.

  • where can i buy Japonais chocolates? i live in the USA and desperately want some. please e-mail me back. jeaninecarmichael@hotmail.com

  • Hi Jeanine-
I haven’t seen them in regular USA stores in over a year now. Even the internet yields little on basic searches, as does their website. The place I would look at is small specialty chocolate or European food shops.

  • A Japonais is a cookie- it’s basically a macaron, only the cookie part, rather than having almond flour in it, is rolled in crushed almonds. :)
