Here at Cocoa-Heaven we don’t often get to review chocolates of a most gourmet nature. Cocoa Angel was able to try Fran’s sea salt caramels in dark chocolate and gave a rave review.
But it’s my turn. I got to try Fran’s chocolate covered almond trios and both the milk and dark sea salt caramels. It came in a very fancy box with a very fancy ribbon. A layer of gold cushioning, a paper wrapper with a gold seal and another layer of gold cushioning, topped with a “what to expect to find” in the box card enclosure. Oh la la.
Now what makes the almond trio a trio, is that there are 3 almonds covered in milk or dark chocolate. I tried both and found that the chocolate did not disappoint. It’s some really high quality stuff, but let’s face it, chocolate covered almonds is nothing groundbreaking. They tasted great, not burnt or bitter, but at the price, not worth it. You could get the same experience from a much more economical source like See’s or an independent candy maker.
If you want to talk about something that is worth the money (and the packaging build up), it’s the sea salt caramels. Fran’s is definitely not for the budget conscious chocolate shopper, but since I received mine as a gift, I have to admit, I might be hooked. You don’t even need a large piece at all to really get the experience. Anything larger than a standard truffle size will be too much for one sitting to really savor and enjoy the layers of flavors. It’s creamy, salty, sweet and has almost a faint liquor after taste, that fades into satisfaction.
It is definitely the best caramel I have ever eaten. If you get the chance ever, eat that. You will not be disappointed.
So if you’re ever in a specialty grocery store and see Fran’s, grab one. You’ll be glad you did.
