This chocolate candy certainly takes the win for longest name by a dark chocolate bar. I didn’t even include that it’s actually “organic & fairly traded.”

The question is, can the chocolate itself live up to it’s monniker?

Equal Exchange Organic Fair Trade Dark Chocolate

Packaging

The package is yellow and brown, reminding me of bananas, there aren’t any, but that’s what I’m thinking of now. The bright red sticker of “Equal Exchange” reminds me that I’m doing a social and responsible good by purchasing this fair trade chocolate bar. (That’s how it works right? Like community service?)

I really think I need to do more research into these fair trade chocolates. Everything I’ve seen so far is either super dark, not fruit anything or costs an arm and a leg. Chocolate bars shouldn’t cost $6 each. In this case, I got the sample for free from a vegan co-worker who wanted to give it a spin. I won’t even ask how much Amazon Fresh is charging.

Appearance

The bar itself is really very pretty, I wish I had been able to photograph more than the wrapper. The chocolate has great lines, neat, very blocky and breaks apart clean. It smells amazing. Rich, chocolate, a hint of almonds, yet just a little bitterness.

The Taste

Very smooth and at 55% cacao, not too bitter, just the right amount. Sometimes those really dark chocolate candies really make my mouth pucker and squirm, but this one creates the need to savor until the last lingering note of chocolate and almonds are gone. Because it’s so dense, it’s very filling right away. You’ll only need to eat a couple of square to satisfy whatever chocolate candy craving has got you going and therefore, make that investment into the bar, last.

  • it smells more bitter than it tastes, which was good for me. I really don’t like bitter chocolate. But being right on the edge definitely makes it more satisfying – it mellows out as it melts in your mouth.

Also, I appreciate that the almonds are chopped fairly small and don’t have the skin on them. You taste and feel the almonds, without feeling like you’re biting into two opposing textures.
