More and more energy bars are finding their way onto the market, be it the classics like Snickers (think Snickers Charged) bars just women, bars just for men, gluten free, fat free, protein packed, the list goes on. What is always facinating is the ones that promise to be chocolate in flavor. True, that basic chocolate doesn’t come as loaded with fats and sugars and it would be easy enough to incorporate chocolate into an energy type bar. Or so we’d think.

Personally I haven’t had much luck in finding a truly tasty chocolate energy bar and today’s offering is a continued step in that direction: Re Bar. A nutritional supplement energy bar with 4 servings of veggies and fruits! Honestly I would not have picked this up voluntarily, it appeared on my desk, promised chocolate, so I bit it. I cannot un-bite it unfortunately.

It’s not the most awful, but it’s certainly far from being the best. While the promise of soy nuggets doesn’t usually stir my senses anyway the ingredients label on the back is what interests me most.

Take a look:
collards, watercress, bokchoy, tomatoes, apple, hemp seed, carrots, spinach, alfalfa, cabbage, broccoli, kale, celery, rosehips, parsley, beets, bell peppers, cauliflower, cucumber, beets and natural flavors.

Holy crud. After all that, natural flavors had to be added! I can’t tell if this is an energy bar or a trip to a Mongolian grill restaurant. I’m pretty sure I prefer the items listed above stir fried and not mixed with “natural chocolate.”

Note to self: alfalfa is for llamas. Broccoli goes with cheese and nothing involving chocolate goes with bokchoy.
