Often we may lean over and look at the gigantic bins of chocolate candy treats at the local grocery store, amongst the offerings of wheat germ, jelly beans and dried pasta. Well, that’s if your grocery store has a large bulk section. Even the chain or smaller ones do tend to have some sort of bulk section of candy, be it jelly, gummi or chocolate. It’s usually a small tower of offerings placed at the end of an aisle, you’ll walk by thinking of milk or sprint, trying to make it to the meat counter before it closes.

But in the interest of all things chocolate, I encourage you to find that grocery store near you that has the large bulk section. Find it and start gathering!

Since you can purchase the items by weight, you can get as little or as much as you want and by buying in bulk, you’re actually getting a better price. It’s also a great way to try something new. Just the other day a co-worker brought me a large strawberry sized milk chocolate square that was full of fluffy marshmallow. Delicious, portion appropriate and at a steal!

Often these stores will also carry more gourmet items, beyond those tasty dark chocolate orange sticks and milk chocolate peanut clusters. You can even find salt caramels, truffles, chocolate covered fruits and nuts of all kinds and peanut butter cups.

Bulk items are also great for gift giving for fellow chocolate candy lovers. Get an empty jar or vase, fill it with chocolatey selections from the grocery store, tie some fancy ribbons around it and voila! Instant gift. Or just by getting a clear, colored or printed cellophane bag, filling it and trying it off with some curling ribbon, you have a nice informal gift or something to supplement a larger gift that you’re trying to fill out.

So get out there and find that grocery store near you and start experimenting!
