Let’s face it: it’s hard to screw up a brownie. Too dry will do it, burnt, dropped into a swimming pool, but most of those situations can be remedied with a good frosting or additions like caramel, nuts or today’s weapon of choice: marshmallows. (OK, maybe not the swimming pool one.)
I was recently gifted with a brownie fresh from the kitchens of the Microsoft cafeteria with the promise that it would be good. And it was. The cake portion of the brownie was a little dry, but what saved it, was most definitely the layer of walnuts, then the layer of mini marshmallows and a very (surprisingly) creamy frosting. I was expecting a tooth rotting sugar rush of a frosting, as the standard with cafeteria brownies everywhere, but this frosting was actually very good. Not overly sweet, creamy consistency and flavor, my suspicion is it’s cream cheese based.
How does it stand up to Metropolitan Market’s Big Bad Brownie? It’s 2nd. Sorry Microsoft, the Big Bad Brownie, done blow your house down. But the marshmallow that is absent (nor needed really) from the Big Bad Brownie makes the Microsoft offering delicious and fun. The trick is to eat it with a fork, since that creamy frosting will get all over your hands otherwise.
The serving size was more than generous, I would say one serving of this marshmallow walnut brownie is equal to two at least anywhere else.
The moral of the story: brownies with marshmallow and walnuts are good. Very good. Metropolitan Market should continue with their strongest point and keep making food. Microsoft should keep working on Vista, but by fueling their employees with marshmallow brownies.
Also, someone please look into Word 2007. There’s a donut in to for you.
