Brach’s was founded in 1904 by German immigrant Emil J. Bach and has since changed hands several times over the years. Currently (2007), Brach’s was acquired by Farley’s & Sathers Candy Company and has continued to hold the brand name of it’s creator who pioneered several candy selling methods. Including the “Pick a Mix” style of selling candy by the pound in grocery stores and the glass candy counter.

The list of Brach’s candy offerings is extensive and seems to hit almost only on non-chocolate items and instead go after a purely sugar base. The few chocolate items that Brach’s does offer should really not be taken internally too much, too often. The chocolate quality is poor, waxy and often just icky. They’re fine for the occasional piece that you picked out into your Pick A Mix selection, but really if you’re going to go Brach’s go for what they do right: sugar.

Since their inventory is so extensive, we’ll start with just their fall and Halloween specific offerings and save Christmas, Valentines, Easter and their regular line up for another day.

The Mellowcreme Selections:

Assorted Mellowcremes

There’s a lot going on in this one, 4 different flavors: maple, banana, candy corn and chocolate. Not a fan of the banana, nor eating more than one piece of maple at a time. The chocolate is not chocolate.

Autumn Mix

The best bet for tooth rotting, sugar coma inducing selection! Mellowcremes, candy corn and indian corn, oh my!

Mellowcreme Pumpkins

My favorite, the soft sugary inside goes well with the slight firmness of the outside for a chewy, sweet experience.

The Candy Corn Selections:

Candy Corn

The classic, done right.

Indian Corn

A twist on the classic that doesn’t offend all the senses.

Milk Maid Caramel Apple Candy Corn

Proceed with caution, there’s a lot of flavors mixing here covered with confectioner’s glaze. The challenge is to try and find the apple flavor, the caramel flavor and the candy corn flavor.

Milk Maid Caramel Candy Corn

I like Milk Maid caramels, I like candy corn, but not together. Check out the Candy Blog for a more in depth look.

Caramels:

Milk Maid Caramels

Now these I like. A lot. Between this and Kraft’s caramels it’s a tough call.
