Last month we reviewed Bissinger’s Naturals which of course led to a tour through their website, catalog and the image that caused both Cocoazilla and Vegan Chocoholic to stop and think “that is the best picture of chocolate I have ever seen, must buy it now….”

Cocoazilla could not resist and purchased a box back in June and they shipped on the promised July date. Unfortunately, when the box was opened….

Someone had Hulk smashed it.

Most disappointing. Since these weren’t a modestly priced treat (counting shipping) Cocoazilla called customer service to investigate. The Bissinger reps were not only sympathetic but super nice AND sent a replacement overnight! And yes, that shipment arrived unscathed, as you can see:

So without further adieu…

Bissinger Dark Chocolate Covered Raspberries

Packaging
Classic chocolate covered box with the Bissinger logo- letting you know you are about to enjoy the chocolate of connoisseurs and kings.

Appearance
These rounded pieces ranged in size from 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches, depending on the size of the raspberry. Each one was perfectly smooth and glossy. The interior had a little bit of white fondant (to hold the raspberry) with a light sugary syrup surrounding the raspberry. The only downside to this construction was that the bottom chocolate layer was thin, so it if it go stuck, cracked or too warm, the liquid leaked out easily and quickly. The top dark chocolate layer was nice and thick, so for storage of uneaten pieces I flipped them over to keep them from leaking (even in the fridge.)

Taste
Make sure that if refridgerated to let these come up to almost room temperature before consuming. Eating them cold leads to hard chocolate that is pointy and hard to chew. Wait till the chocolate starts to “sweat” a little.

That being said, these were FANTASTIC. High quality dark chocolate with a bitterness that did not overpower the taste of the fresh fruit. The raspberries were clearly hand picked, high quality fruit and matched well with the syrup and chocolate. The syrup tasted of fresh raspberries also, which led to slurping up any escaped drips. I can’t repeat what a co-worker likened them to, but I assure you, he also felt that this were top notch.

Get your own before these gourmet chocolate covered raspberries are gone, it’s seasonal to July only!

  • vegan chocoholic feels it necessary to point out that these are NEARLY vegan (they contain butter oil). :) No hate mail please!

If you’re able to make an exception, they’re infinitely more indulgent and satisfying than other ‘nearly vegan’ alternatives.

  • I recently bought a box of these lovely chocolates, but the downside was that some of the raspberries’ syrup seeped out and made the inner plastic wrap sticky as I was unwrapping it. They looked fine such as in the second picture you took, but on a closer look, my paper cups were wet with syrup. When you got your second box, did this happen to you or were they perfectly intact?

  • Second box was completely intact, gorgeous like the pictures. There were a couple with the wet paper cups but nothing like the complete smash-dom of the first box. Perhaps your box got a little warm? Caused some leaking?
